Historically, CIEL as an Ecosystem Language was founded on February 7th 2011 at [The Open Group Conference](http://archive.opengroup.org/events/q111/baranek.htm) San Diego,CA, USA; where we (Vladimir Baranek and Mark Skilton) presented our first narrative for Cloud Language Foundation and established CIEL Working group. Here is a short description of what we aimed to achieve by establishing ecosystem focused foundation with holistic approach towards ecosystem languages...
The power of Cloud Language Foundation is in unified symbolic language, abstraction and minimization of complex interactions, and preservation of translational capabilities into next stages of service design and execution.
The Cloud Language Foundation (represented by #CIEL) enables service Eco design and brings real business ecosystem into symbiosis with other systems (life, machine, social) and interconnect them. Language, or naming, has the power to define what is normal and abnormal and it can be inclusive or exclusive. We want to transfer this power to ecosystem family of symbolic languages and allow business users, social evangelists, enterprise architects and High level Managers to re-articulate their needs, let them define new concepts, their visions and transfer complex systems and their interactions into world of abstraction by symbolic languages. These abstractions enable discussions between different groups of audiences and are easily transferable into design tools and knowledge systems.

We defined following CIEL principles to lay out foundation for an ecosystem languages :
- CIEL is a language that is a semiotic (a visualization based representation focused on multi-dimensional spaces and events) representation of ecosystems.
- While Spheres and CIEL can be used to design large scale systems of systems interactions the more common likely use is to focus specific wide scale capabilities onto smaller scale domain issues and opportunities. For example, design of a combined info hub that addresses connected space issues. This could be as simple as a visualization of a social network service but could also be a bigger scale country or multi country solution.
- CIEL is establishing a foundation for semantic based visualized objects with connected interactions that combine physical and virtual spaces in time and spatial references.
- The scope of design approach will expose funding and metrics issues to "make real" ecosystems. Because typically systems are owned by specific commercial entities. Systems of systems will potentially cut across multiple ownership and stakeholder domains. A core part of this is the "Open and close" ecosystem philosophies. Alone of the benefits of Spheres and CIEL is expose these open and close boundaries expressed in a holistic and meaningful way.
